Following the Second World War, Berlin needed to rebuild.

Both East and West German officials needed to rehouse Berliners who were forced to live in the ruins of the conflict decades later.

In the East, the Socialists crafted several iterations of social housing to present a vision of a Communist future that could compete and surpass the capitalist status quo.

Their counterparts on the other side of The Wall sought to house the hundreds of thousands of “guest workers” and their families that were allowed to enter Germany as a means of rebuilding it.

Today, these pre-fabricated buildings exist in the shadow of those intentions.

Often maligned as dated or crime-riddled, they host rich communities and offer solutions to many issues facing re-urbanising societies. This projects tells their story through portraiture
